The title may be difficult to remember--but the story is not. Written as letters and telegrams between Juliet, her best friend, and her publisher, and Juliet and her new found friends on postwar Guernsey Island, "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society" might haven fallen under the chick lit spell had it not embraced deeper themes. It is simultaneously a coming-of-age tale (even if Juliet IS in her 30s), a light history of the German occupation during World War II, a paean to classic literature, and, of course, a story of serendipitous love. While some of the islanders' voices (in particular the men's) are a bit hard to distinguish, Juliet's rings through loud and clear, and it is her deep compassion--and her sometimes venomous wit--that carries the novel. Highly recommended for those interested in a fresh, "feel good" read.
